Did you win the US Powerball? You can find out right here. We post the winning numbers as soon as they come out. Below you'll also see the next jackpot, what time the draw is in Nigeria, how to play from home, and answers to the questions people ask us most.
The widget above updates after every draw. It shows the draw date, the winning numbers and whether anyone hit the jackpot. When nobody wins, the jackpot rolls over and gets bigger for the next draw.
The draw happens late at night in the US, so for us in Nigeria it's already the early hours of the morning. Most players just check their numbers after they wake up.
Each draw gives you six numbers. Five are white balls picked from 1 to 69. The sixth is the red Powerball, picked from 1 to 26. The order of the white balls doesn't matter. To win the jackpot, you must match all five white balls and the red Powerball.
You don't need all six to win money though. Even if you only match the red Powerball, you still get a small prize.
Power Play is an add-on that boosts your smaller prizes. Before every draw, a multiplier is chosen. It can be 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x or 10x. The 10x only shows up when the jackpot is $150 million or less. If you added Power Play, your prize gets multiplied by that number. The jackpot itself isn't multiplied. The $1 million second prize is a special case, and it always becomes $2 million with Power Play.
You'll find the multiplier for each draw in the results widget.
There are nine ways to win a prize. Here's what each one pays on a normal ticket, without Power Play:
| Match | Prize |
|---|---|
| 5 white balls + Powerball | Jackpot |
| 5 white balls | $1,000,000 |
| 4 white balls + Powerball | $50,000 |
| 4 white balls | $100 |
| 3 white balls + Powerball | $100 |
| 3 white balls | $7 |
| 2 white balls + Powerball | $7 |
| 1 white ball + Powerball | $4 |
| Powerball only | $4 |
Every prize is a fixed amount except the jackpot, which changes with each draw. The widget always shows the latest figures.
The next draw is at 10:59 PM Eastern Time in the US. That's the next morning in Nigeria. Nigeria keeps the same time all year, but the US changes its clocks, so our draw time moves by an hour depending on the season.
Ticket sales close some hours before the draw, so don't leave your purchase to the last minute.
There are three draws a week. They happen on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday nights in the US. Because Nigeria is ahead, you'll see the results on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings.
| US draw night | Nigeria time (WAT) |
|---|---|
| Monday | Tuesday morning |
| Wednesday | Thursday morning |
| Saturday | Sunday morning |
Powerball jackpots are always announced in dollars. A lot of Nigerian players want to know what that looks like in naira, so the widget shows both. The naira value moves with the exchange rate.
Here's a quick example. Say the jackpot is $100 million and the rate is ₦1,500 to $1. That makes the jackpot ₦150 billion. It's only an example, so always use the live number on this page.
One more thing. The jackpot you see advertised is the annuity amount. If you take the cash option, you get less. We explain this in the FAQ below.
You don't have to live in the US to play. Many Nigerians use online services that buy a real ticket for them in the US. It works like this:
Stick to sites with a good reputation, clear rules and real reviews. Also find out what the law says where you live before you start.
It's a simple game. You pick five numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26. One play costs $2.95.
Don't want to choose? Use quick pick and the computer will do it for you. Every combination has the same chance, so there's no smart or wrong way to pick.
The jackpot starts at $20 million. Each time nobody wins, it grows. That's how it ends up in the hundreds of millions, and sometimes over a billion.
Power Play costs $1.5 extra per line. It doesn't make the jackpot any easier to win. What it does is make your smaller prizes bigger when a multiplier is drawn. If you like the idea of a bigger prize for a small match, it may be worth it. If you only want the jackpot, you can skip it.
A syndicate is a group that buys tickets together and shares whatever they win. The group can afford more lines, so your chance of winning something goes up, and you each pay less.
Friends, family and coworkers often do this. If you join one, agree on how the prize will be split before the draw, and write it down. That saves a lot of fighting later.
Checking is quick. Just do this:
If you bought through an online service, your account normally shows the result for you. Small wins usually go straight to your balance. For big wins, the service will contact you and tell you what to do.
Keep your ticket or proof of purchase safe until you're sure about the result. Prizes must be claimed within a set time, so don't wait too long.
Some people like to study old results to look for patterns. Just know that every draw is random, so past numbers can't tell you what comes next. Still, it's fun to look.
The current format of 5 from 69 and 1 from 26 started in October 2015. Older results used different numbers, so they aren't a fair comparison.
You can browse past draws by date in the history section of this page. You can also see which numbers have come out the most and the least.
The widget lists the numbers drawn most often, both white balls and the red Powerball. It also shows "overdue" numbers, which are the ones that haven't shown up in a long time.
Keep in mind that each ball has the same chance every time. A "hot" number isn't more likely next, and a "cold" number isn't due. Treat these stats as fun facts and nothing more.
Powerball is tough to win, so it's good to know the real odds. Your chance of hitting the jackpot is 1 in 292,201,338. Your chance of winning any prize at all is about 1 in 25.
| Match | Odds |
|---|---|
| 5 + Powerball (Jackpot) | 1 in 292,201,338 |
| 5 | 1 in 11,688,053 |
| 4 + Powerball | 1 in 913,129 |
| 4 | 1 in 36,525 |
| 3 + Powerball | 1 in 14,494 |
| 3 | 1 in 580 |
| 2 + Powerball | 1 in 701 |
| 1 + Powerball | 1 in 92 |
| Powerball only | 1 in 38 |
More tickets give you a slightly better chance, but the odds are still very long. Play for fun, and never spend money you can't afford to lose.
Powerball has paid out some of the biggest lottery prizes ever. These are some of the top ones:
A new record can happen at any time, so check the official Powerball site for the latest list.
In most cases, yes. You can't buy straight from a US state lottery website unless you're inside that state. But Nigerians can use online services that buy official tickets for them. Choose a site you trust, and check the rules where you live first.
The draw is at 10:59 PM Eastern Time. In Nigeria that's about 3:59 AM WAT when the US is on daylight time, and about 4:59 AM WAT when the US is on standard time. Draws happen on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday nights in the US, so for you it's Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings.
Usually, yes. The US takes tax out before it pays you. For people who aren't US citizens, the federal withholding rate on lottery prizes is 30%. Some states add their own tax too, depending on where the ticket was bought. You may also have to think about tax rules in Nigeria. Tax is different for each person and rules can change, so talk to a tax expert before you claim a big prize.
The winner chooses. The lump sum is one payment, but it's smaller than the advertised jackpot, often about half, before tax. The annuity pays over 29 years in 30 payments, and each one grows a bit every year. With the lump sum you get the money now. With the annuity you get steady income and a bigger total in the end. Nigerian winners get the same choice as US winners, and you have to decide when you claim the prize.
